DANCE ELECTIVES

 Tap, Jazz, Modern, & Hip Hop 

JAZZ CLASSES

Ages 7 & Up
 

Beginning Tap & Jazz

Ages 7-13

This upbeat class pairs wonderfully with Beginning Ballet or Musical Theatre 1/Intro, but can also be taken as a stand-alone class. The tap portion of this class will focus on steps that use the different parts of the tap shoe to make specific sounds, while building correct technique. Basic tap vocabulary will be introduced. In the jazz portion of this class, students will learn correct basic alignment, posture, and vocabulary they will use as they begin to learn specific jazz styles in Jazz 1 and up.

Parents are invited to observe class during our special Observation Week in the Spring.  

These classes perform in an all school recital, Finale, in June. 

The Friday classes are a part of our Enrichment Friday Program and can be combined with other classes to create a full day! Click here for more information.

Jazz 1

In this class, students will learn basic jazz techniques that are most commonly used in musical theater productions. The primary focus will be on Broadway and Fosse jazz styles, with some some minor emphasis on Latin and Lyrical jazz near the end of the semester. Students will study the correct alignment, posture, and vocabulary affiliated with each unique style and learn how to apply what they have learned to other classes they are taking (musical theater, ballet, etc.).

 

PREREQUISITE: Beginning Tap & Jazz, Musical Theatre Dance, or by special permission.

This class performs in the all school recital, Finale, in June.

Jazz 2

In this class, students will learn advanced styles of Traditional, Fosse, Broadway, Contemporary, and Lyrical jazz techniques. The similarities and differences of these styles will be explored through the techniques themselves as well as through the music that accompanies them. Students will be able to identify each style and discuss how to incorporate what they've learned into their other classes (musical theater, ballet, etc.).

 

PREREQUISITE: Jazz 1 or by special permission.

Hip Hop & Jazz

This upbeat class pairs wonderfully with Contemporary 1, Ballet 1 or 2, and Musical Theater, but can also be taken as a stand-alone class. The hip hop portion of this class will include an introduction to foundational hip hop skills including isolations, popping and locking, and incorporating these skills into combinations. This training is perfectly paired with the jazz portion of the class, where students will learn basic alignment, posture, and jazz vocabulary necessary to move into Jazz 1.

TAP CLASSES

Tap 1

At this level, most of the basic tap vocabulary will be introduced/ reviewed. An emphasis on clarity and rhythmic consistency will be enforced as students progress. Throughout the term, exercises will improve integration and fluidity in linking steps together as well as introducing more complex combinations and rhythms.

Tap 1/2

At this level, most of the basic tap vocabulary will be introduced/ reviewed. An emphasis on clarity and rhythmic consistency will be enforced as students progress. Throughout the term, exercises will improve integration and fluidity in linking steps together as well as introducing more complex combinations and rhythms.

Tap 3

This class includes advanced tap techniques and styles including rhythm and Copasetic Canon Repertory. Students will learn the skills necessary to perform advanced tap routines and improvisation with a focus on rhythm variations and dynamics.

PREREQUISITE: Tap 2 or by special permission.

Parents are invited to observe class during our special Observation Week in the Spring.

CONTEMPORARY MODERN CLASSES

Ages 7 & Up
 

Beginning Contemporary Modern

Ages 7-13

This class serves as an introduction to some common styles and basic principles of contemporary dance. Students will build awareness of correct physical alignment and will gain strength and coordination through movement. Exercises that encourage creativity and self-expression will also be given. This class is a perfect companion to Beginning Ballet or Ballet 1, or can be taken alone by students ages 7-9, who have little or no dance experience.

Parents are invited to observe class during our special Observation Week in the Spring.  

These classes perform in an all school recital, Finale, in June.

Contemporary Modern 1

This class serves as an introduction to some common styles and basic principles of contemporary dance. Contemporary Modern 1/2

Modern dance encompasses a vast scope of movement styles and can often be synonymous with Contemporary Dance. This class is a foundational introduction to some of the leading techniques: Graham, Horton, and Contact-Release.  Exposure to modern dance is essential for the versatile dancer. It increases freedom of expression through improvisational techniques. Dancers will build strength, fluidity, and body awareness, as they learn proper weight placement, alignment, and where to initiate different movement. 

Prerequisite: Beginning Contemporary Modern, Ballet 3, Musical Theatre Dance, or by special permission.
